Personally, I honestly can hang very well with a latency of up to 10 ms with either, e-drums, guitar with soft-sims etc.
My recorded midi is pretty much on the grid. Even though I only have midi IN & midi OUT on the modules, they have an internal setting that allows me to turn the midi OUT into a midi THRU essentially.passing the midi information. In case you're wondering, daisy-chaining the 4 drum modules 1st, before leaving the last, does NOT add any latency, or create any problems. I don't have a single problem with latency tracking with my Yamaha ekit. I'm using an Aardvark Q10 PCI based card in this, set next to it's lowest latency (Turbo-Mode is lowest actually). I'm going into Tootrack Superior/EZDrummer drum VSTi's, running under Win XP with Cubase. My e-kit is generally connected to one of my older dedicated VSTi DAW PC's. 1st I run standard midi between my modules daisy-chained in series, then the last module go's into a MOTU 8X8 midi router (gives me options to choose which of 5 DAW PC's I want to run midi into).
I use standard 5-pin midi DIN, never USB midi.

I use a customized Yamaha DTXpress set up, about 4 DTX drum kits/modules combined, giving me about 40 plus triggers. I don't have the lowest latency to report with my set up, but here's my scenario below. The way the module works internally means when your trigger the module with the V-Drum pads and monitor the module output you completely remove all MIDI jitter.Īnother top tip is record your V-Drum bed track first then overdub everything on top of it like bass, keys, guitar this way the drum track will appear to have a much better feel as the rest of the instruments will move with without ever groove you did manage to get with the compromise of a "blow up" rubber drum kit!Īdding V-Drums to already recorded tracks is going to mean reaching for MIDI quantise and editing. If I monitor the V-Drums module I get a great feeling track needing almost no MIDI edits - if I monitor a VI live then I loose the subtle feel and groove and I need lot's more edits.

and I have a modern 6 core overclocked super duppa pro built workstation - and I still can't stand the 3 to 5 ms of TOTAL latency. Triggering a VI live with the MIDI > Interface > DAW > VI > interface D/A > headphones = playing immersed in custard!! Monitor the module when tracking and record the MIDI stream in Cubase then afterwards use the MIDI stream to trigger your VI of choice. For me there's only one way to work with my Roland V-Drums.
